What is a Licensed Asbestos Contractor?

A Licensed Asbestos Contractor is an organisation which is licensed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to remove higher-risk asbestos containing materials such as flocks, limpets, asbestos insulating board (AIB), millboard, loose fill asbestos and fine asbestos debris. This regulated activity can only be undertaken if correct airlock and decontamination procedures have been put in place before works commence.

It is a criminal offence to undertake licensed asbestos removal without a licensed, the punishment being an unlimited fine and/or up to 2 years imprisonment.

How do I find a Licensed Asbestos Contractor?

The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for awarding licenses and you can search the HSE database of Licensed Asbestos Contractors to find an approved company.

Why is it important to employ a Licensed Asbestos Contractor?

If you’re a Dutyholder, you have a duty to manage asbestos in a non-domestic premises by law. However, the regulations don’t just apply to non-domestic premises and homeowners are also restricted to the types of asbestos they can remove themselves.

There are no safe forms of asbestos and attempting to remove high-level types of asbestos without a license and the correct equipment can put your health (and the health of those around you) at risk of developing respiratory diseases in later life.

A Licensed Asbestos Contractor will use the correct methods and equipment for removing the asbestos containing material, including Negative Pressure Units, Decontamination Units and high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) equipment.

A Licensed Asbestos Company will be aware of any new or amended regulations and methods introduced by regulatory bodies and the HSE ensuring the safe removal of asbestos at all times.
